AIG Hospitals is set to induct Proton Beam Therapy, a ground-breaking technology for treating cancer. The hospital on Saturday (January 11, 2025) announced that its board has approved an investment of ₹800 crore for the new equipment, which will be located within its existing Gachibowli campus. “This will make it the third Proton Therapy Centre in the country and the first in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh,” as per a release.

The centre’s cornerstone will be the Proteus ONE Proton Therapy System equipped with DynamicARC, acquired from IBA, a Belgium-based leader in proton therapy technology. This advanced system allows for highly precise radiation delivery that reduces damage to surrounding healthy tissues, making it effective for treating cancer in children and adults.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, chairman of AIG Hospitals, highlighted the transformative potential of the project. “Our commitment is to place patients at the heart of everything we do. The acquisition of the Proton Beam Therapy System and our partnership with IBA represents a leap in providing cutting-edge, compassionate cancer care. The Proteus ONE will anchor our new 300-bedded dedicated oncology centre, delivering care comparable to the best in the world,” he said.

Proton Beam Therapy is regarded as the most advanced form of radiation therapy available today. It delivers exceptional precision, targeting tumors with high accuracy while sparing surrounding healthy tissues. This makes it beneficial for patients with tumors located near critical organs, as well as for pediatric cancer patients.

“The acquisition of this technology aligns with AIG Hospitals’ vision of providing world-class cancer care within India. This treatment option will further enhance our comprehensive suite of cancer care services, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, supportive care, clinical research, and training,” said P.V.S. Raju, vice-chairman of AIG Hospitals.
