New Delhi: Veteran Malayalam actor Shanawas, son of legend Prem Nazir, has died at the age of 71. According to reports by Manorama Online, he had been suffering from kidney and heart-related ailments and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
The actor breathed his last on Monday. His death has left the film industry and his fans in deep mourning. The actor’s last rites will take place on Tuesday (August 5) at the Palayam Muslim Jamaat cemetery.
Malayalam Actor Shanawas Dies At 71
Shanawas had been battling kidney and heart-related ailments for many years. According to Manorama Online, the veteran actor passed away on Monday around 11:30 p.m. after prolonged health issues. A resident of Vazhuthacaud’s Cordon Trinity, he was admitted to a hospital when his condition worsened. Shanawas leaves behind a lasting legacy in Malayalam cinema. He also shared screen space with his father Prem Nazir in seven films.

Born to legendary film icon Prem Nazir and Habeeba Beevi in Thiruvananthapuram, Shanawas pursued his early education at Chirayinkeezhu English Medium School, Montfort School, and Yercaud. He held a master’s degree in English Literature from New College, Chennai. Shanawas made his acting debut in the 1981 film Prema Geethangal, directed by Balachandra Menon.

Shanawas appeared in more than 50 films and also acted in several television serials. Mazhanilavu, Neelagiri, Manithali, Gaanam, Garbhasreeman, Zakariyayude Garbhinikal and Aazhi were among his notable movies. Talking about his TV work, he appeared in shows including Shankhumugham, Veluthu Katrina, Kadamattathu Kathanar and Satyameva Jayate.
Shanawas Last Movie
After a quite long hiatus from acting, Shanawas resumed return to big screens with 2011 film China Town. His last appearance was in the critically acclaimed film Jana Gana Mana (2022), which also starred Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Shanawas is survived by his wife Ayesha Abdul Aziz, sons Ajith Khan and Shameer Khan, and daughter-in-law Hana. His demise has left a deep void in the hearts of his fans and in the Malayalam film industry.
