Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation on Saturday with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy where the two leaders discussed evolving situation in the European nation. According to the Prime Minister’s office, President Zelenskyy shared his perspective on the recent developments related to Ukraine. This is the second time within a month that PM Modi and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy have spoken to each other. Both leaders took to their social media to share the update.
Modi, Zelenskyy Phone Call
“Prime Minister thanked President Zelenskyy and reaffirmed India’s steadfast and consistent position for peaceful settlement of the conflict and support for efforts aimed at earliest restoration of peace. PM reiterated India’s commitment to extend all possible support in this regard,” said the PMO. The PMO said that the two leaders also reviewed progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership and discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

Zelenskyy Seeks India’s Support
Taking to X, Zelenskyy said that an immediate unconditional ceasefire is must for peace in the region. Zelenskyy said that he informed PM Modi about the talks with President Trump in Washington with the participation of European leaders to achieve real peace. Ukraine reaffirmed its readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia…I thank the Prime Minister for his words of condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” he said.
The Ukrainian President further added, “We coordinated our positions ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The end of this war must begin with an immediate ceasefire, with the necessary silence. This position is understood and supported by everyone. It is impossible to speak meaningfully about peace while our cities and communities are under constant fire. India is ready to make the necessary efforts and to deliver the appropriate signal to Russia and other leaders during the meetings on the sidelines of the summit.”
Zelenskyy said that he looks forward to meeting PM Modi in person. “We also discussed our bilateral relations, preparations for exchange of visits, and the holding of a meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission. There is potential we can realize. I will be glad to meet the Prime Minister in the near future,” he said.
Modi-Putin Meet
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in China’s Tainjin to attend the SCO summit. Notably, PM Modi will be holding bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, first face to face meeting since US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariff decision. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is likely to feature during the talks but the focus will be on bilateral issues. PM Modi and President Putin have had a telephonic conversation earlier this month where the latter briefed PM Modi about the latest situation in Ukraine.
India Maintains Humanitarian Stance: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India has maintained a principled and humanitarian stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a position that is “equally appreciated” by both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He made the remarks during an interview with Japanese news outlet ‘The Yomiuri Shimbun’ during his visit to the country.
“India has maintained a principled and humanitarian stance on the conflict which is equally appreciated by both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. In line with this, both the leaders spoke to me to share their perspectives on the developments related to the conflict. I reiterated India’s principled and consistent stand and encouraged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict,” the Prime Minister said.

Responding to a question on what role India envisions in peace efforts between the two nations, PM Modi said, “I have already indicated India’s willingness to support meaningful efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution of the conflict. I believe, by virtue of our good relations with both sides, including key stakeholders, we can strengthen efforts dedicated to the restoration of an early and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
