Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, China, on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. Later in the day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed that during the bilateral meeting, the Indian leader raised the issue of cross-border terrorism.

During a press briefing, the Foreign Secretary added that PM Modi, in the meeting, underlined that cross-border terrorism impacts both nations. He further added that India received the understanding and cooperation of China.

“Cross-border terrorism was mentioned by the Prime Minister as a priority. He did underline the fact that this is something that impacts both India and China,  and that it’s important, therefore, that we extend understanding and support to each other as both of us combat cross-border terrorism. I would, in fact, like to say that we have received the understanding and cooperation of China as we have dealt with the issue of cross-border terrorism in the context of the ongoing  SCO Summit.”

India-Pakistan Tensions

This emphasis by PM Modi on cross-border terrorism comes months after heightened tensions with Pakistan following the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 individuals were killed.

After the terrorists opened fire in Pahalgam on April 22, the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7 to avenge the killings. In the precision strikes, the Indian forces targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
