 A student from Telangana was fatally shot by police officers in Santa Clara, California, after he allegedly attacked his roommate with a knife. 

The incident occurred on September 3, but the family reportedly learned of his death only two weeks later.

The deceased, identified as Mohammed Nizamuddin from Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district, had gone to the United States in 2016 to pursue higher education at Florida College. After completing his MS, he worked as a software professional and later moved to California following a promotion.

Reports suggest that police fired four bullets at Nizamuddin. His identity was not immediately confirmed, and his body is currently at a local hospital pending formalities.

According to media reports, Nizamuddin’s father, Husnuddin, a retired teacher, learned about the incident on September 18 from a friend of his son, who is from Raichur, Karnataka, and also lives in Santa Clara. Hasnuddin has appealed to the Indian government to assist in bringing his son’s mortal remains back to Mahabubnagar. 

Majlid Bachao Tahreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan shared the letter Hasnuddin wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging the ministry, the Indian Embassy in Washington DC, and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco to facilitate the return of Nizamuddin’s body.

 

 

Police Statement On The Incident

According to a statement issued by Santa Clara police department (SCPD) on its website, on September 3, 2025, at about 6:18 am, officers responded to a stabbing reported at a home on the 1800 block of Eisenhower Drive. When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect, which led to a police-involved shooting.

“On September 3, 2025, at approximately 6:18 A.M. Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) officers responded to the 1800 Block of Eisenhower Drive in Santa Clara for the report of a stabbing in a residence. The caller stated the suspect had stabbed one victim in the residence. SCPD officers arrived, encountered the suspect and were involved in an Officer Involved Shooting. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for their injuries. The Officer was not injured,” the statement read.

Police chief Cory Morgan explained that the altercation between two roommates escalated into violence, with one stabbing the other before officers arrived. When police forced entry into the house, Nizamuddin was allegedly holding a knife and threatening to attack again.

“Based on our preliminary investigation, we believe the officer’s actions prevented further harm and clearly saved at least one life,” Morgan said.
