“I can’t even imagine… earthquakes used to happen before, but this one felt life-threatening. It was as if the bed was swinging, jolting for a long time. About 5–6 years ago, there was a 6.9-magnitude quake, and smaller ones keep happening from time to time,” he said.

Assam Located in One of India’s Most Seismically Active Regions

Assam is located in one of India’s most seismically active regions and is classified by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) as Hazard Zone V, the highest risk zone in the country. Zone V is considered a “very high damage risk” area, where earthquakes of magnitude 7 or above can occur, putting structures at greater risk of severe damage.

Assam has experienced some of the most powerful earthquakes in history, including the 1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake (magnitude 8.6) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1).
