Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made a financial relief package of Rs 1,200 crore available for relief and rehabilitation work in Uttrakhand, which has been hit very badly by a series of monsoon-related tragedies. The announcement was made after a high-level review meeting and an aerial review of the affected areas.
State Seeks Higher Relief Package
Though the Centre has committed a large amount, the Uttarakhand government had originally sought a much bigger relief of ₹5,702 crore from the Centre. This was sought following widespread damage due to heavy rains, cloudbursts, and landslides throughout the districts of the state, such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Nainital.
A central team had also toured these disaster-hit areas for a thorough inspection to determine the magnitude of the damage.
Widespread Ruin And Rising Toll Of Deaths
The state has experienced its worst sequence of natural disasters after the disastrous 2013 Kedarnath tragedy. Official figures say the disasters since last April have killed 85 people, left 128 injured and 94 missing.
