A four-member family from Thalavady at Kuttanad in Alappuzha district of Kerala died in a fire that broke out at their residence at Abbassia in Kuwait on July 19 night.

The deceased have been identified as Mathew Varghese (40), his wife, Lini Abraham (38), and their children Irin (14) and Isaac (9).

According to the relatives, the family departed for Kuwait in the early hours of July 19 after a month-long vacation. Mathew had been employed in the Gulf nation for the past 15 years. Lini was working there as a nurse.

Citing the preliminary information received, the relatives said the fire was caused by a short circuit in the air conditioner at the familyโ€™s residence. They reportedly died in sleep after inhaling smoke.

The relatives are yet to receive any official confirmation on the arrival of the bodies from Kuwait.

Champakulam block panchayat member Ajith Kumar Pisharath said the postmortem examination of the bodies had been completed.

โ€œWe have received information that the bodies have been shifted to the morgue of Sabah Hospital. Following the interventions made by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, and Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, steps have been expedited to bring back the bodies soon,โ€ Mr. Pisharath said.
